12 Tips for Writing an Effective Essay

 Essay writing can be challenging. Here are some tips to improve your essay writing skills. 

  1. Don’t use rhetorical questions like 'what is life?' if you are not going to answer the question yourself and keep referring back to the rhetorical question. 

  2. Don’t use definitions: Describing words at the start of the essay is old schooled. You should avoid doing it at all times. 

  3. Declarative statements are better (instead of saying ‘what is water say’ use ‘water is’

  4. Try not to cover too much: If you try to do too much. It generalizes what you are trying to say. 

  5. Avoid generalized sweeping statements like all women love romance novels

  6. Be weary of exaggeration 

  7. Stay away from the grandiose ideas, focus on the concrete

    3. Final Draft - Self reflect 

  8. Publish your essay: Let students publish their content, for example, a magazine cover and news website

  9. Don’t use words like ‘many’, ‘similarities’ and ‘dissimilarities’ x is akin to y and not z

  10. Don’t use passive voice, try to use active voice 

  11. Use verbs, it will add clarity to your writing, search for any ‘to be’ verb in your writing and omit this 

  12. Remove filler words from your essay: 'This' and 'that' must be removed from your essay
