3 Tips for Teaching with Different Perspectives

Students in your class can be queer, or refugees. Teaching with no judgement is essential as their parents might be queer or refugees themselves.

Queer: "of, relating to, or characterized by sexual or romantic attraction that is not limited to people of a particular gender identity or sexual orientation"

Refugee: "a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution"

For queer students:

1. Use intertextuality to create more depth into canonical texts like Romeo & Juliet

2. Use graphic novels to showcase different identities

3. Create content with the students so that get exposure to more identities and they get a voice

For refugee students:

1. Read as a group in the classroom to make students who are shy more comfortable in saying the words out loud

2. Mix subjects like math and language to introduce vocabulary  they are familiar with appear less foreign

3. Use funny stories to create a connection between the teacher and student

As a rule of thumb, we are in a classroom setting replicating what is out there in the real world.
